My story with lumbar disc injury started a whopping 19 years ago when I was just 20 years old and getting into fitness and weightlifting. Of course I went into it at max effort, got fast results and quickly became addicted. Training with friends was fun but at that age ego plays a massive role and we were all trying to outshine each other. Of course an injury was just around the corner. I remember extremely clearly the moment I hurt my back.
We were doing deadlifts and all going for new PB’s and honestly looking back at it now I had no idea what I was doing. I pulled from the floor and WHAM I felt my back go. I quickly left that movement alone and tried other exercises but the damage was done. I went home lay down and then tried to get ready for work at my hospitality job. I couldn’t get out of bed though. I knew I’d done some real damage at that point.
Over the next few weeks I saw both chiropractors and physiotherapists to get on top of my injury and yes it slowly got about 60% better but whenever I sat for a long time such as driving that ache down my leg would come on and then my back would seize up again and deadlifts were definitely a no go for me.
I’d even seen a specialist who said my back was on the cusp of needing a spinal fusion at the young age of 20 years old but I just wasn’t ready to go down that path I knew there had to be a better option.
After researching everything I could about my injury I became compleley obsessed with finding the solution to fixing my back pain. So much so that I then enrolled at university to continue this education. Over the next five years I learnt a tonne about the body, pathology, neurology and rehabilitation but my back was still cooked. I even went on to do my thesis on lumbar disc injuries and won an award from the Australian and New Zealand spinal research awards for my contributions in this field but my back still hurt. Is it no wonder that you’ve seen a bunch of therapists for your back pain but got no where. Basic levels of university training just don’t cut it for dealing with complex injuries like lumbar disc herniation.
It wasn’t until in my first job out of university that I really got to learn by observing other health practitioners and seeing their methods for resolving injuries.
I was hungry for more so travelled the world seeking out as much information as possible from experts around the world.
That’s when I started getting results. I took parts from so many people I had trained from incorporating different perspectives and philosophies from every health professional I’d observed and worked with and used this knowledge to shape a rehabilitation plan specifically for my spine and then one day the pain was gone…
